Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Creation of the Nevada Northern Railway Foundation by the City of Ely

CITY OF ELY PROCLAMATION

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Creation of the Nevada Northern Railway Foundation by the City of Ely

WHEREAS, the Nevada Northern Railway Foundation has dedicated itself to preserving and developing the historic Nevada Northern Railway for 40 years since its incorporation on November 8, 1984; and

WHEREAS, the Foundation, a nonprofit corporation, was established to preserve, protect, and develop the Nevada Northern Railway National Historic Landmark; and

WHEREAS, over the past 40 years, the Foundation has saved nine historic buildings from collapse, restored three of the original steam locomotives to operating condition, and has continually maintained the railroad track; and

WHEREAS, the Foundation has raised and invested over $52,800,000 in the preservation, protection, and development of this National Historic Landmark Railroad; and

WHEREAS, the successful development of the railroad has brought more than 750,000 tourists to the City of Ely over the past 40 years, contributing an estimated $112,000,000 to our community; and

WHEREAS, the City of Ely and the Nevada Northern Railway Foundation share a long-term goal of fully restoring the railroad to support freight service; and

WHEREAS, none of these accomplishments would have been possible without the tireless efforts and dedication of the Foundation’s members and volunteers;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Council of the City of Ely, Nevada, on behalf of the people of Ely, that the month of November is hereby declared Nevada Northern Railway Foundation 40th Anniversary Month in recognition of the Foundation’s remarkable contributions to our community and heritage.
